Does anyone know how to get placed in the top 10 results on search engines without paying a SEO company?

I have just launched my payroll business and submitted my website to many search engines and directories. I know that using links and good keywords are very important. When I do a search for my company name, it appears on the 1st page which is great but when I enter a keyword I can't find myself. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated!
